About Kurabuchi English Village

Kurabuchi English Village is a mountain village study away facility for elementary and junior high school students where they live in an English environment. It was started as a partnership program between Takasaki City and Sodaterukai, a public interest incorporated foundation and the first organization to start a mountain village study away initiative in Japan. This is a domestic English study away facility that took an old abandoned school area and built an all-wood dormitory, where children can participate in a variety of activities and enjoy daily life in English with international staff. While living here kids can improve their practical English skills, along with gaining a sense of independence, compassion, and passion for life.

It’s a place full of laughter. Please come and have a look!

I am always amazed when I see the kids having fun conversing in English with both International and Japanese staff.

Our international staff come from all over the world (the US, UK, Canada, China) and our Japanese staff and the kids come from all over Japan (from Hokkaido to Nagasaki prefecture). By spending the year together with them they have the chance to learn about a diverse range of values. Since staff work in shifts, each employee has a lot of discretion which I think is very rewarding.

The relationship between the kids and staff is great and our workplace is always filled with laughter. I believe we have a good work-life balance, with many summer, winter and spring vacations that run alongside the kids long vacations. If you like children, nature or English please come and visit Kurabuchi English Village.

At Kurabuchi English Village, Sodaterukai provides the children’s lifestyle guidance and principles.

Sodaterukai Representative Director

Kids who have gained a variety of life and nature experiences through the Study Away program are full of confidence backed up by real-life experience. Through experiences rooted in farming, mountain, and fishing communities’ kids acquire the backbone and pride of being Japanese. Many of them use this sense of purpose to go beyond Japan into rest of the world. I believe that sharing food, clothing, and shelter with children and being able to see them grow up close is very rewarding. We are looking forward to your application if you are interested.
